Over-Exposed

Ollie and I took part in a little impromptu photo shoot after our Tuesday morning walk.  A few of the photos were quite over-exposed.   I thought it was kinda cool.

Hat: borrowed from Steve,  Watch: Gift :)
Vest: Gap - thrifted,  T-Neck: Target,  Boots: Kohl's
Jeans: James Jeans & Sweater: RD Style via Hot Mama

Yes, I do make out with my dog.  But you already knew that.
No, I did not wear these boots on our walk.  Pretty sure I would die.

Julianne Hough

I have a new girl crush. "New" in the sense that I had never heard of Julianne Hough until she started dating Ryan Seacrest (go Ryan!).  Then she guest starred in an episode of Fashion Police and I was smitten.  Mostly with her adorable hair cut (copying soon), but also with her sweet persona and effortless fashion sense. Determined to become her BFF, I Googled...

I discovered that I'm way late to the Julianne Hough party.  So maybe I don't watch Dancing with the Stars, follow country music, or read many Nicholas Sparks novels.  Even so, I'm sure we have plenty in common.  Like, she loves her puppies (me too!).  She loves shoes and even has her own line at Sole Society (omg, me too! - about loving shoes.  My own shoe line...someday).  Also, we're the same height - 5'4".  Also, we like dudes born in 1974.  I think Steve and Ryan would get along great.

That's all I have for now.  Hey, Julianne.  Call me.

For the Locals: Clothes Closet

Sure, I took a year-long hiatus from my true love of second-hand shopping to submerge myself in a world of premium denim and Nikibiki tank tops, but the gift of thrift never died. It's a case of absence making the heart grow fonder...and smarter.   Now I have a keener eye for quality, making my shopping deals even more fierce.  Yeah, I brag.

So, how jazzed was I to be invited to shop and then blog about a new-to-me thrift store on my side of the city?  Um, very.  A quick, 10 minute drive to South St. Paul...

Shirt: thrifted via Clothes Closet,  Vest: Gap - thrifted,
Jeans: Citzens of Humanity - thrifted via Clothes Mentor
Socks: Target,  Boots: J. Crew,  Bag: DSW

The first thing I noticed upon arrival at Clothes Closet was the well-managed floor space.  It's not a huge store, but there is a lot of selection which is organized and easy to maneuver through.  I found a set (yellow, pink, & blue) of pinstriped oxfords in pristine condition.  Though tempted to buy all 3, I eeny-meeny-miny-moed for the yellow winner.  I also found a bracelet, a trendy little sweater and the most fabulously wearable vintage blazer - all for about $15.  Oh happy, thrifty day.

Other great amenities I should mention:  clean dressing rooms and a 50% sale rack.  Nice.
Even more impressive than my purchases was the friendly volunteer staff who are clearly passionate about what they do.  I had the pleasure of meeting sweet and saucy Virginia.  At 95 years old, she has been volunteering with Neighbors, Inc. since it began more than 40 years ago!  She showed me around and shared oodles of information about the store's purpose and operation.

Virginia is the coolest!

Clothes Closet  is just one facet of Neighbors, Inc., a non-profit, social service agency that provides emergency and supportive assistance programs to the local community.  Joan (Director of Programs), introduced me to several staff members and gave a tour of the entire facility.

I left really inspired.  A few "neighbors" in 1972 saw a need to "reduce poverty, promote self-sufficiency, and build community".  Now, the organization serves several hundred families every month in multiple capacities.  Amazing!

Clothes Closet is always receiving donations (Monday-Saturday), so there's never a bad time to donate or shop.  But do save this date:  February 14-16 they will be having a Susan B. Anthony sale and ALL women's clothing will be 50% off!

Now for the part where YOU go check it out for yourself.  Closet Closet has generously provided a shopping voucher worth $20 (bet you get an entire outfit for that!) for one Spoils of Wear reader.

1.  Leave a comment with your email address.
2.  For an extra entry, like Neighbor's, Inc. on Facebook.

Good luck and happy thrifting!

*big thanks to Sal for recommending me for this post and Alyssa for making it happen- so fun!

Snow Blower

Sunglasses: TJ Maxx,  Scarf: Hot Mama,  Sweater: OldNavy.com,
Skirt & Tights: Target,  BootsFrye via Amazon

It's time to buy a snow blower.  This is the time of year when we would normally escape to a warm weather destination.  It's not happening this year for several reasons. The purchase of a snow blower is one among several semi-large necessities we have yet to buy for our new house.  (Side question: when is a house no longer "new"?  This is our 2nd winter here.)  Since accepting the reality of not seeing Mickey this year, the idea of a plowed driveway has become all the more appealing.  Then I think of how many pairs of boots I could buy for the price of a good snow blower and am reminded that sun and time are free.

2 Degrees

It's freezing outside.  Like, 2 whole degrees.  My natural reaction to this weather is to snuggle up in my pajamas under a fleece blanket in front of the fire place, wasting the day away watching season five of Big Bang Theory.  Then I stumbled upon this inspiring little FabSugar video and all of sudden I'm ready to get dressed and maybe do something with my life.  Perhaps I'll go shopping or make a fashion video.  Yeah.

A Winning Mood

Hat: Stella Blu , Scarf & Sweater: Old Navy,  Boots: KMart
Tank: NikiBiki  & Jeans: Joes Jeans via Hot Mama

I've been in the mood to write and blog.  But I get about 2 paragraphs in to a post, hate it, and have to start over.  That's happened 4 times now.  So for today, I give up.  A little disappointing, but at least that stupid 'publish' button stops screaming at me.  This is me...winning cheating winning.
